Elephantism Honored by URTNA

Ryuichi's insights about West Africa, ecological study of elephants (in Kenya), and study of the history of the continent were beautifully laid out on the DVD, ELEPHANTISM. This unusual work just received a special award from URTNA (Union of National Radio & Television Organizations of Africa) at their 4th annual festival held in Nairobi, Kenya on October 4th. This special award is designed to honor an audio/visual work about Africa that was created by a foreign production.

Elephantism's executive producer, Mr. Kumagai from TBS, was on hand at the ceremony to receive the award.

Sakamoto and Sylvian Team for World Citizen

In celebration of J-Wave radio's 15th Anniversary, Ryuichi and David Sylvian recently got together in an NYC studio to record their collaboration "World Citizen - I Won't be Disappointed." You can get a sneak preview of the track, which also features contributions from Haruomi Hosono and Yukihiro Takahashi from Sketch Show, during Radio Sakamoto on J-Wave this Sunday, September 21st at 12:00 midnight in Japan. Check out http://www.j-wave.co.jp/original/radiosakamoto/ for more details.

You know we wouldn't let these guys leave the studio after just one song, so they also used the opportunity to record the Sylvian-penned "World Citizen" along with Skuli Sverrisson (bass), Amedeo Pace (guitar), and Steve Jansen (percussion). These tracks along with a Ryoji Ikeda remix will be released in Japan by Warner Music as a maxi-single on October 8th. More information about the release will be available at http://wmg.jp/sakamoto/ .

Insensatez Remodel Available on iTunes

M2/S' take on the Jobim classic Insensatez from A Day in New York has been tweaked out and reborn as Insensatez (remodel by alva noto). Alva Noto, a/k/a artist/musician Carsten Nicolai, was approached by M2/S to create a special version of a track of his choice exclusively for Apple's iTunes online store, and the result is on sale now.

Nicolai is known for his use of electronic sound and visual art as a kind of hybrid tool to create his own microscopic view of creative processes. He was awarded the Ars Electronica Golden Nica prizes for Digital Music in 2000 and for Interactive Art in 2001. Nicolai and Sakamoto recently collaborated on the release "Vrioon," which is available at http://www.raster-noton.de/ .

More information about Apple's iTunes store is available at http://www.apple.com/itunes/ . iTunes is currently available only to Apple users, but a PC version is rumored to be available as early as the end of the year.

Sakamoto Draws Inspiration from Kurosawa for PS2's "Seven Samurai 20XX"
Akira Kurosawa's "The Seven Samurai" is about to take on new life as a video game exclusively for PlayStation 2 this fall. With the blessing of Kurosawa's family, Sammy Corp. of Japan has announced the release of "Seven Samurai 20XX," based on the film. A game with a family tree like this needs killer animation and an epic score. Sammy Corp. turned to artist/designer Jean ''Moebius'' Giraud (Alien, The Abyss, The Fifth Element) for the design of the game's 100-plus characters, and Ryuichi Sakamoto for the Seven Samurai 20XX themes. ''We're trying to create a video game that is beautiful and lyric,'' Giraud says.

A Day in New York Out Now!
Morelenbaum2/Sakamoto's A Day in New York is officially on sale now, and the rave reviews are already rolling in:

Chicago Sun-Times:
It's theoretically impossible to improve on perfection but Morelenbaum 2/Sakamoto does just that, with its second release, "A Day in New York." It's all as heavenly as a summer breeze and just as seductive. Read the Full Review

Billboard
Even deprived of the Rio air, the music brims with lilting, lyrical charm on such international standards as "Desafinado" and "Insensatez." Artists the world over have made these songs ubiquitous, but in the hands of M2/S, they sound freshly minted. A bonus is a Portuguese version of Sakamoto's beautiful Jobim homage, "Tango." Morelenbaum2/Sakamoto return with "A Day in New York"
After touring the world in support their release of Casa, Morelenbaum2/Sakamoto, joined by guitarist Luiz Brasil and percussionist Marcelo Costa, discovered that they had reached a new level of collaboration in Jobim’s music. The Casa tour was scheduled to end with a performance at the renovated Winter Garden at New York’s World Financial Center on November 6, 2002, but no one wanted the dream to end so soon. The next day the group got together one last time before going their separate ways to record their live set, capturing the experience of the tour and new insights into the music. They’re all thrilled to have the opportunity to share the result of what transpired on November 7, 2002 with you….A Day in New York.
